Gahkuch
The green capital of Ghizer on the bank of the Gilgit River — our home, and the gateway to every valley in the west.
Overview
Gahkuch is the administrative capital of Ghizer District, a lush town spread along the bank of the Gilgit River about 72 kilometres west of Gilgit on the road toward Shandur. Surrounded by high mountains and watered by the river and its channels, it is a place of orchards, poplar avenues and quiet everyday mountain life rather than grand monuments.
For travellers, Gahkuch is the natural gateway to the whole of Ghizer — the launch point for journeys on to Gupis, Yasin, Ishkoman, Phander and the high Shandur Pass. It is also the home base of Gohar E Gahkuch Travels, which is exactly why we know these roads so well.

Gahkuch & the Gilgit River
The heart of Ghizer, where the river runs green through orchards and poplars.
Gahkuch sits on the bank of the Gilgit River, and the river shapes daily life here — feeding the orchards, the fields and the lines of poplar that turn gold in autumn. There are no famous monuments in town; the pleasure is in the setting itself, with high mountains rising on every side and the water always close. It is an easy, restful place to pause, walk beside the river and watch village life go by before continuing west into the deeper valleys of Ghizer. As the district capital it also has the region's main bazaar and services.

A historic village a short way from Gahkuch, named for an old mountain fort.
Sher Qila — 'the Lion Fort' — is a historic village near Gahkuch in Ghizer, named for an old fort that recalls the district's long past as a chain of small mountain principalities. Set among green fields and orchards above the river, it offers wide views over the surrounding valleys and is a pleasant, little-visited stop for travellers interested in the region's history. Like much of Ghizer, its appeal lies in landscape and living culture rather than large restored monuments, and it is easily combined with a slow journey along the Gahkuch–Gupis road.

The beautiful river road west — classic slow-travel country.
West of Gahkuch the road follows the Gilgit River through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Ghizer, linking a string of green valleys — Gupis, with its lake and trout, and the broad side-valley of Yasin. This is classic slow-travel country: river bends, farmland and small villages set beneath high peaks, with far fewer visitors than the better-known valleys to the east. From Gahkuch it is the beginning of the long, scenic journey toward Phander and the Shandur Pass.
